What’s the difference between using a belly band and doing Belly Binding?

Most modern medical bands only cover the waist, leaving the hips and bottom ribs without support. These bands are usually made of polyester or a cotton/poly blend, which isn't breathable material. Many users complain that they are uncomfortably hot, too stiff, and/or too bulky to be worn under regular clothing. Our wraps are made of 100% cotton batik that contours to your body, allowing you to move, sleep, bend, and hold your precious baby comfortably.

While Belly Binding is done with one long piece of material that can be sized to fit your body, some medical bands only go up to 2XL, which won't fit all postpartum women. Additionally, you may have to buy two different sized belly bands to account for the shrinking you'll do. With Belly Binding, the extra material can be cut off or simply wrapped around your body a couple more times. But the fit is always right!

When will you come to do the Belly Binding?

For maximum benefit, it is recommended that Belly Binding begin within the first week following a vaginal birth. But I have wrapped women in their 60's who are actively trying to regain muscle tone and need back support, so it's never too late! Additionally, some women have utilized Belly Binding during menstrual cycles to help cope with cramping and speed up the process.

For a Cesarean birth, it is recommended to wait until the incision site has begun to heal, usually 3-4 weeks postpartum. Many women find they are fine binding earlier, but this is about your personal comfort. If you are mindful of your body's needs and are resting most of the day, binding may be right for your earlier than a woman who is out and about running errands a week or two after her Cesarean birth.

How long do I need to Belly Bind?

Most cultures that practice binding in the postpartum period recommend wrapping for at least 4 weeks. The hormone Relaxin, which is responsible for aiding your body into a more flexible state before birth, remains active within your body for at least 2 months after birth. If you wrapped for 6-8 weeks, you would be helping this hormone along as it guides your bones, joints, and ligaments back to their pre-pregnancy positions.

I recommend Belly Binding for 10-12 hours a day, when possible. There will be days you don't get to it because you're busy learning about the newest little one in your life. And there will be days when you forget to wrap until the afternoon. This is okay! My clients who wrap only a few days a week for a few hours a day still love the experience and see benefits!

Will Belly Binding help/cure/fix _________?

I believe it's very likely that Belly Binding will help you in many ways, but of course I can't guarantee it because I'm not medically providing your body care. I am not a physician or any other type of medical care provider and make no claims to be able to treat any illness or ailment. What I can say, though, is that I've worked with people from all walks of life who have "leftover" physical issues from pregnancy, birth, & breastfeeding. I believe prevention is key and that Belly Binding is one of many preventative tools we can utilize.

Women who Belly Bind report that wrapping helped quickly bring together their abdominal muscles after childbirth (diastasis recti), felt amazing for their lower and mid-back, helped speed up the bleeding process following birth, and made them feel more comfortable doing everyday activities like picking up their babies, breast or bottle feeding, & even going for walks. While I make no claims that Belly Binding will do the same for you, it could prove beneficial and involves little time and energy to accomplish overall.
